JMS Press’ Object Catering Toronto Menu is an artists’ book, catalogue, object of objects, and menu all rolled into one 24 page, full colour, risograph printed publication. It documents a selection of “unaltered, street level objects” found in Toronto by an anonymous, formerly Toronto-now-Los Angeles-based artist that are offered for sale at intentionally affordable prices ranging from $4.99 to $9.99. Purchasers of the $15.00 menu are invited to order an object of their choice for pick up or delivery.

The menu was my must-have acquisition of this past October’s 1/Edition Art Book Fair in Toronto. It ingeniously critiques the economic aggrandizement of the found object that occurs through the commodification and collecting of contemporary art while it simultaneously strives to correct that trajectory to a more democratic end. Object Catering serves as the perfect antidote to the holiday peak season of commodity fetishism and the ideal gift for the art object, or just plain object, lover in your life.

Look for a future Object Catering Menu of items selected from the everyday of Los Angeles. And while you’re at it, JMS Press’ eight artists’ publications issued this year are equal parts eye and brain candy.
